EAST HIGH SCHOOL
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO USA
MARCH 23, 2018
“WELCOME HOME, CLASS OF 2008,” the signs read. As Troy Bolton pulled his '15 Chrysler PT Cruiser into a parking space at East High, he smiled as he saw how East High had changed since the last time he stepped out of its hallowed halls.
“Boy, how it's changed. Eh, Gaby?” he said to the Latina woman seated in the passenger seat. Gabriella Bolton nodded. “And yet, deep down, it's still the same,” she responded. “Troy! Gabriella!” a voice called out.
Troy's eyes widened when he recognized the voice who called out to them. Kelsi Evans smiled, then ran over to hug Troy and Gabriella. “Playmaker! How long has it been?” Troy said. “Close to seven years-when Ryan and I got married,” Kelsi responded. “Notice something missing?”
“Did you get contacts?” Gabriella asked. “Yeah, I did,” Kelsi said. “So, where's Ryan?” Troy said. “He's over there with Zeke and Sharpay,” Kelsi said, pointing to where Ryan was talking to Zeke and Sharpay Baylor.
“So, guys, it's been about ten years since that last big adventure we all had,” Kelsi said. She closed her eyes for a moment. “You're still sore about Jason, Kelsi?” Troy asked. “A little bit,” Kelsi said. “But, I'm grateful for Ryan. I mean, I know he respected me after I rebelled against Sharpay during the Twinkle Towne incident, but after Jason left me, Ryan was the proverbial knight in shining armor.”
Troy and Gabriella shared confused looks with each other. They had heard Ryan be called many things over the years, but never “knight in shining armor.” Troy and Gabriella walked up to Ryan, Zeke and Sharpay.
“Ryan!” Gabriella said. “Gaby! Troy! How are you two?” he said as he moved over to hug Gabriella and shake Troy's hand. “Fine,” Troy said. “Looking good, Ryan.” “Yeah,” Ryan said. “Being a top Broadway producer pays good money these days.”
Gabriella turned to Zeke and Sharpay. “And how's the Iron Chef doing these days?” she said to Zeke. “Amazing,” Zeke responded. “I just wrapped up filming my 30th battle on Iron Chef America. Can't say anything due to those NDAs.” (A.N.-Non-disclosure agreements. Under one myself, so that's how I know how annoying they are.-W.R.)
Troy smiled at Sharpay. “Hello, Sharpay. I loved you in Star Trek: Federation as Carol Marcus,” Troy said. “Thanks, Troy,” Sharpay said. “Actually won an MTV Movie Award for that role-Best Kiss with Chris Pine. Hottie then, hottie now-but not as hot as my Iron Chef here.”
“More things change, more they stay the same,” Troy said. Troy began to think back to that last year, and all that changed...and all that remained the same.
To be continued...

CHAPTER 1
--
EAST HIGH SCHOOL
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO USA
AUGUST 19, 2007
It was the first day of the 2007-08 school year. As Troy walked on campus, he remembered how close he came to losing the one thing he loved more than basketball during his time working at the Lava Springs Country Club that summer.
He remembered what he wrote in his electronic journal the night of that incident.
I thought I lost her for good this time. Gabriella Montez was the best thing that ever happened to me and I had to go and mess things up once and for all. Since getting hired at that godforsaken resort, I had changed so much that Gaby walked away.
But, love has a way of changing people's attitudes. Even though the actions of Sharpay Evans caused Gaby and I to break up, I felt like I had to honor the promise I made to Sharpay-to duet with her during the resort's end-of-summer “Star Dazzle” talent show.
So, I walked into Sharpay's dressing room. “How's your show going?” I asked her. Sharpay saw me in her mirror and turned to see me. “How's it going?! My show makes the captain of the Titanic look like he won the lottery,” she said.
“I'll sing with you, Sharpay,” I said. “What?!” she whispered. “I promised, and I keep my promises,” I said. “But what was the first thing you said to me when I started working here?” “'Bring me more iced tea?'” Sharpay responded.
I shook my head. “Think harder. 'We're...'” I started. “...'all in this together,'” Sharpay finished. “Exactly,” I said. “Well, we are,” Sharpay said. “So, let's get out there and knock them dead, Troy Bolton!”
I held up my hand. “I do the show if the Wildcats do the show,” I said. We both heard screaming, a crashing sound and glass breaking from out on stage. “And I'd think fast,” I quickly added. “I just sort of wished you were doing this for me,” Sharpay said. “You're a good guy, Troy. And actually right now, I think I like you better than I like myself.”
Then, the implications of what Sharpay said entered into her mind. A strange expression crossed her face as she said, “Did I just say that?” I walked off. As I did, I heard Sharpay call out, “Girls! Places!”
I ran to the resort kitchen and told the team the news. By that time, the entire Wildcats basketball team, their cheerleaders, Sharpay's brother Ryan and Kelsi Nielsen were already there and, apparently, waiting for me. As I walked in, I saw Kelsi hand Ryan a manila envelope.
“I talked to Sharpay. Everything's cool,” I said as I walked in. “And speaking of my sister, she wants you to learn a new song,” Ryan said, handing me a pile of sheet music. I looked at the sheets in my hands. “Huh. Every Day. I CAN'T LEARN A NEW SONG!” I exclaimed. “Well, Kelsi will help you with it,” Ryan said.
With that, Kelsi took my hand and led me to the adjoining dining room, where a piano was set up. As I quickly learned the song, I had no idea of the plan that was unfolding around me.
With the new song firmly planted in my head, I ran off to see Sharpay and ask her just what the heck was going on. 'Cause, at the time, I simply assumed that Sharpay was being the prima donna she had always been and switched the songs on me without my knowledge.
“Where is Troy?” Sharpay yelled as I approached the backstage area. “Hey! Why did you switch songs?” I asked. “'Switch songs?' What?” Sharpay responded. “Well, Ryan said that...” I started to say before the resort's manager, Mr. Fulton, pulled me on stage. It was at this point that I started to feel that something was up.
Once on stage, Kelsi began to play the opening notes of Every Day. I began to sing:
Once in a lifetime
Means there's no second chance
So I believe that you and me
Should grab it while we can
Then, all of a sudden, I heard a very familiar female voice begin to sing. I happened to know for a fact that it was not Sharpay to whom the mysterious voice belonged.
Make it last forever
And never give it back
Kelsi mouthed “GO ON!” and gestured me to make my way to center stage. I saw that, way in the back of the darkened audience pit were my Wildcat comrades. There was a brief flash of movement as two of them parted ways for the mysterious newcomer. I continued to sing as a perplexed expression began to cross my face:
It's our turn
And I'm loving where we're at
A spotlight flared into life and exposed to me the identity of the mysterious newcomer: GABRIELLA!!
Because this moment's
Really all we have
My best friend, Chad Danforth, had a wide grin on his face. It was then that I put two and two together: Everyone (except Sharpay, it seemed) worked together and convinced Gabriella that I did not mean to let the changes that caused our relationship to fall apart go as out of control as they ended up being.
As our voices rang out across the sky, I felt something return to me that I felt I lost when Gabriella gave me back that necklace I gave her at her locker on the last day of school. As I held Gabriella's hand, I knew that whatever our senior year had in store for us, we'd all be in it together.
Troy saw Chad and smiled. Chad said a few words to girlfriend Taylor MacKenzie, then turned to Troy. “Hey there, Troy,” Chad said. “Yeah, hi, Chad,” Troy said. “Patched things up completely yet?” Chad asked.
“Perfectly,” Troy said. As if on cue, Gabriella walked up to where Troy and Chad stood. “I gotta go see your Dad,” Chad said. Troy and Chad exchanged farewell gestures, then moved to meet up with their girlfriends.
“Hey, Wildcat,” Gabriella said before kissing Troy. Troy smiled. He thought he would never feel that sensation after what happened at Lava Springs. When the kiss broke, Troy looked at Gabriella. “You don't know how happy I am that you forgave me,” he said.
“You've got some very persuasive friends,” Gabriella said. “I do too, it seems.” Gabriella looked at Taylor, who returned the nod. Gabriella turned back to Troy. “So, you up for a little one on one after school?” Gabriella asked.
“Name the time and place,” Troy said as Sharpay walked up to them. “Hello, Troy. Hello, Gabriella,” she said. “Hello, Sharpay,” Gabriella said. “Troy, I still cannot thank you enough for helping me at Lava Springs,” Sharpay said.
“I'm a man of my word,” Troy said. “If I promise something to someone, thy will be done.” “Then, I need your help one more time,” Sharpay said. “It seems that I'm no longer East High's Ice Queen.”
Troy's eyebrow twitched. Gabriella looked at Sharpay. “Well then, who is?” she asked Sharpay. “That's what I need you two to find out,” Sharpay said. “Troy, maybe the rest of the basketball team might know. Gabriella, talk to your fellows in the science club. Possible that one of them would have an idea. I'll pay you whatever you need.”
Troy shook his head. “We're friends, Sharpay,” he said. “You don't need to pay us a thing,” Gabriella said. Sharpay hugged Troy and Gabriella. “Thanks, you guys,” she said as she moved to join her posse.
Troy looked at Gabriella. “Ready to solve a mystery?” Troy said. “If you are,” Gabriella said.
Who is the new Ice Queen of East High?
The quest begins next time...

Chapter 2
“I cannot believe you want to help her, Troy,” Jason said after Troy outlined the situation regarding Sharpay and the new Ice Queen of East High.
“Well, before last summer at Lava Springs, I would not have imagined it either, Jason,” Troy said. “However, guys, Sharpay has changed. We will help her, and that's that.”
Chad nodded to Troy. “So what's the plan, Troy?” he asked. “Well, we need to keep close tabs on the senior girls. Sharpay told me that the new Ice Queen is one of them. The lesser of two evils is the one we know,” Troy said. “We do not know who this new Ice Queen is, so we need to find out quick. Dismissed.”
As the basketball team ended their meeting, Gabriella stood at the chalkboard as she briefed the other members of the science club on what Sharpay told her regarding the new Ice Queen's identity.
“Everyone here knows how much power Sharpay wielded as the Ice Queen. Last spring, Sharpay did everything in her power to keep Troy and myself out of the Twinkle Towne show. And just a few weeks ago, she came pretty close to breaking Troy and I up for good,” Gabriella said.
Looking at Kelsi and Ryan, Gabriella smiled. “But, Sharpay is no longer the Ice Queen. Unless we find out who she is and quick, we will be unprepared for the worst surprise imaginable. I do not know who the new Ice Queen is, but I do know that we must find out quick. Any ideas?”
There was no response from the members of the science club. “All right, everyone,” Taylor said. “We'll meet on Friday for another meeting on this situation. That'll be all.” As the members of the science club left the science classroom, Sharpay walked in.
“Sorry, Sharpay,” Gabriella said. “We still don't know.” Sharpay shook her head. “Troy had no joy, either,” she said. “Well, we'll be keeping an ear out,” Gabriella said. “And I am sure Troy and the other Wildcats will, too.”
“I am sure,” Sharpay confirmed.
The next day, Sharpay entered the science classroom, a shocked look on her face. “I got a message from the new Ice Queen last night,” she said. “One of the workers at Lava Springs called Dad and gave him a message from one of the guests, addressed to me-by name. Dad wrote it down, then gave it to me.”
Sharpay fished a piece of paper from her pocket, then handed it to Gabriella. “'I'm coming to destroy Troy Bolton,'” Gabriella began. “'I witnessed the disgusting display at the Star Dazzle talent show and said, “That Latina b---h does not deserve a fine man like Troy Bolton.”'”
Gabriella paused for a moment, stunned at the epithet used against her by the letter's mysterious writer. After a couple of deep breaths, she resumed reading the letter. “'I guaran--tee you that by the time the caps fly in the air at graduation, I will have Troy all to myself and that all who stand in my way shall be annihilated. Signed...'”
Gabriella looked down at the paper and looked at everyone, then said the name of the letter's author. “'...Kelsey.'” Thinking that Gabriella said Kelsi, all eyes in the science room turned to Kelsi. “How could you say such a thing, Kelsi?” Taylor said.
“Uh, it's not K-e-l-s-i who wrote that letter,” Sharpay said, taking the note from Gabriella and handing it to Taylor. “Her name is K-e-l-s-e-y Margera, originally from West Chester, Pennsylvania,” Sharpay said. “After her brother Brandon got married last summer, some embarrassing footage from the bachelorette party was leaked by accident to her entire high school body. Shortly thereafter, her adopted family moved out here.”
“And how do you know all this?” Taylor said, handing the note back to Sharpay. “I know a guy who lives back there with his Russian mail-order bride. The man called me this morning. After I read him the message, he confirmed who she is. He said that the message was 'something Bam's half-sister would cook up.'”
Taylor turned to Kelsi. “I'm sorry I accused you, Kelsi,” she said. “It's okay, Taylor,” Kelsi said. “We just need to find a way to keep my 'evil twin' from ruining everything.”
In the gym, Troy shared the identity of the new Ice Queen to the team. “Her name is Kelsey Margera. Apparently, she witnessed mine and Gabriella's performance at Lava Springs and grew attracted to me to such a degree that she intends to bowl over everything and everyone that stands in her way.”
The next day, as Kelsi went to meet Jason for a lunch date, she saw a horrifying sight: Jason kissing another girl. Kelsi had the wherewithal to snap a cell phone photo, which she promptly sent to Gabriella. She then ran away, crying.
At the after-school science club meeting, Sharpay walked into the science classroom and saw Gabriella and Taylor trying to console Kelsi, who was crying. “What the heck happened, Gabriella?” Sharpay asked.
“Kelsi saw Jason kissing another girl,” Gabriella said. She moved over to the teacher's desk and picked up several color photographs. “And from the looks of it, our new Ice Queen has claimed her first victim.”
Gabriella handed the photos to Sharpay. Sharpay gasped as she saw the face of the new love in Jason's life. Sharpay pulled her PDA from her pocket and called up a picture on it. Holding the PDA up to the pictures blown up from Kelsi's cell phone camera, Sharpay shook her head. “It's her, all right,” Sharpay said.
Sharpay showed the picture on her PDA to Gabriella and Taylor. The face was unmistakable. “I gotta go tell Troy,” Gabriella said. Gabriella ran out of the science room.
“Any news on the Ice Queen?” Troy asked. “Nope,” Chad said. “You're looking awfully happy today, Cross.”
Jason smiled. “I got a new girlfriend. That b---h Kelsi cannot hold a candle to my new Kelsey,” Jason said with a smile. Troy grabbed Jason by the collar of his jersey and slammed him against the locker room door. “If I ever, ever hear you talking that way about any of my friends again, I will have you thrown off the team. Is that clear?!”
“He can't do that,” Jason said. “Actually, he can,” Chad said, walking to stand next to Troy. “He can recommend to his father, Coach Bolton, that you be removed from the team for unsportsmanlike conduct.”
“Besides,” Troy said, releasing his hold on Jason's jersey, “Miss Margera is after me, remember? She's probably just using you to get to me.”
“No way, bro,” Jason said. “Kelsey Margera is the hottest girl in this school. Sharpay, Kelsi, not even your s--t girlfriend Gabriella can stand up to Kelsey.” A loud gasp sounded from the members of the basketball team who were watching the confrontation from the bleachers.
Troy's face exploded in anger. But, two deep breaths later, he turned to Chad, a calm expression masking the disgust and anger he felt towards his soon-to-be-former teammate. “Chad, tell my dad that I am recommending Jason Cross be relieved from the team on grounds of conduct unbecoming.”
“And what shall I say is this conduct unbecoming?” Chad said. “Using derogatory language against other students,” Troy said. Turning back to Jason, Troy simply said, “Get out of my sight.”
Jason stormed out of the gym. As he did, Gabriella walked up to the doors. Jason just cocked back his arm and slapped Gabriella. Fortunately, Ryan was walking past the gym on his way to meet Sharpay and go home.
He ducked into a nearby classroom and touched an intercom control. “Hello, Principal Oliver? This is Ryan Evans in Room 619, near the Gym. I just saw Jason Cross slap Gabriella Montez for no apparent reason.”
However, Jason heard Ryan report his indiscretion and proceeded to run at Ryan. Before Jason could do anything however, two school security officers ran in and apprehended Jason. Ryan ran into the Gym and saw Troy comforting Gabriella. “What did I do?” Gabriella said, crying.
“You did nothing,” Troy said. “Jason was just angry that I was gonna have him thrown off the team.” “Why?” Gabriella sniffed. Chad spoke. “Jason made some rather derogatory statements directed to Kelsi and to you.”
“What did he say that started all this?” Ryan asked. “Well, Jason said that 'that b--h Kelsi cannot hold a candle to my new Kelsey' and that 'Sharpay, Kelsi, even your s--t girlfriend Gabriella' cannot stand up to Kelsey,” Chad said.
“Speaking of Kelsi, how did she take Jason breaking up with her for this Kelsey person?” Ryan asked. “Lousy,” Gabriella sniffed. “I gotta go check on her,” Ryan said, running out of the Gym.
In the science room, Taylor was consoling Kelsi as Ryan ran in. “Ryan, what's going on?” Taylor asked. “I saw two guards run past the room.” “Jason did and said some rather derogatory and violent things, stuff I dare not describe,” Ryan said.
“I-(sniff)I heard the security say that Jason actually slapped someone. Who?” Kelsi said. Ryan sighed. “Gabriella,” he said after a while.
Taylor and Kelsi shared shocked looks. “Taylor, why don't you check on Gabriella? I'll look after Kelsi,” Ryan said.
Taylor nodded as she left the classroom. Ryan sat in a desk next to Kelsi. “Kelsi, I'm so sorry about all this,” Ryan said. “But, at least, I can now tell you how I feel about you.”
Kelsi looked up at Ryan. “How...how you feel about me?” Kelsi stammered out.
“Yeah,” Ryan said. “When I helped you get Troy and Gabriella back together at Lava Springs, I started feeling towards you like I've never felt anything for anyone before.” Ryan took Kelsi's glasses off, so that he could look into Kelsi's blue eyes when he said what he was about to say.
“I love you, Kelsi Nielsen,” Ryan said.
Tears began to fall from Kelsi's eyes once more. However, it was for reasons far more pleasant. “You...love me?” she said. “Yeah,” Ryan said as he took Kelsi's hand in his. “Will you be my girlfriend?”
Kelsi smiled through now-freely flowing tears. “Yes!” she said. Kelsi and Ryan kissed, not knowing that Troy, Gabriella, Chad, Taylor, Zeke and Sharpay were watching. When the kiss broke, Troy began to clap.
Chad said, “Awesome. Simply awesome,” while Gabriella smiled. “Not bad, Playmaker,” she said, using Troy's nickname for Kelsi.
What plans will Kelsey Margera have in store next?
Next time, the Fall Musical...

Chapter 3
The next day, the school was talking about how Jason was expelled for his language and unprovoked assault on Gabriella.
In Coach Bolton's office, Troy and Chad were talking to Coach Bolton about how to handle Jason's absence from the team. “Dad, what are we gonna do?” Troy asked. “We need a full team for our home opener against West.”
“How about this, Troy?” Coach Bolton said. “After school tomorrow, we hold an open tryout. Any student who can make the qualifications can try out.” Chad frowned. “I have it on good authority,” he began, “that West High's got a couple of girls on the team this year.”
“I was aware of that,” Coach Bolton said. “That is why I said that any student who makes the qualifications can try out.”
Coach Bolton turned to face Troy. “Is Gabriella all right?” “I called Mrs. Montez this morning,” Troy said. “She's all right, considering.” “Okay,” Coach Bolton said. “I know you love her. By extension, I am concerned for her as well.”
“Thanks for saying so, Dad,” Troy said as he stood up and left Coach Bolton's office. Chad nodded, then left as well.
The next day, Coach Bolton, Troy and Chad sat at a table outside the Gym and signed in the applicants. There was a surprising amount of girls signing up. Finally, a girl in a East High hoodie approached the sign-in table. “Name?” Coach Bolton asked.
The girl pulled down her hood and smiled. “Gabriella Montez,” she said. “Gaby?!” Troy said. “Hello, Wildcat,” Gabriella said. “Well, don't think your relationship with me will give you any advantages over any of the other applicants,” Troy said.
“I understand,” Gabriella said. “Well then, you're signed in. Go in and dress out,” Coach Bolton said. Gabriella nodded, then walked in the Gym.
The next morning, during the announcements, Coach Bolton came over the P.A. for the big announcement of who was accepted onto the East High basketball team. “Folks, we all were shocked by the recent incident involving the expulsion of Jason Cross and subsequent vacancy on the East High basketball team,” Coach Bolton said.
“Now, I hold in my hand the name of our newest Wildcat basketball player,” Bolton said. “I expect this person to show up after school today at the Gym for practice.” The sound of paper ripping could be heard over the pickup.
“Gabriella Montez,” Coach Bolton said. In Gabriella's homeroom, cheers rang out as the fact that Gabriella had become the newest Wildcat.
After school, Gabriella walked into the Gym and smiled as her new teammates greeted her. Coach Bolton handed Gabriella her uniform. She smiled as she saw “Montez” and the number 33 on her uniform. “All right, Miss Montez. Dress out and let's see how it looks on you,” Coach Bolton said. “Yes, sir,” she said before moving into the girl's locker room.
A few minutes later, Gabriella came out in her full uniform. “Please be aware, Gabriella, that while you are on this floor, you will follow mine and my father's directions at all times. I will expect the same out of you as I would any other person on this team. Do I make myself clear?” Troy said.
Gabriella gave a mock salute and responded with a sarcastic “Yes, sir.” Chad started laughing, then the rest of the team followed suit.
A few days later, the team gathered in the locker room for a pre-game pep talk. “Guys...and gal...this is it,” Coach Bolton began. “Our title defense begins here. Last year, we survived a crisis involving the 'food chain' that was in force. But, now, there is a new status quo in play-one where we can achieve what we want if we work our asses off.”
Troy and Gabriella looked at each other and smiled. “Let's get out there and get it done...Wildcats style!” Coach Bolton said.
The game was quite competitive. But, at the last second, Gabriella sank the game-winning shot-from half court-in order to win the game for East High, 57 to 54.
The next morning, Gabriella woke up and got on her computer to check her e-mail. After a few congratulatory messages from teammates and well-wishers—as well as an invitation to a date that night from Troy, there was an obscene message.
It read in part, “When you least expect it, I will find you and force you to love me. Your boyfriend and teammates will not find you in time before I rape you.” Gabriella printed a copy of the message and ran to show it to the team.
After looking at the message, which was signed “J,” Troy frowned. “Everyone, we need to find out who sent Gaby this message,” he said. “I have a bad feeling about it, Troy,” Sharpay said. “I think Jason and Kelsey are looking to destroy this school.”
“Well, we're not gonna let them,” Troy said. “Now, let's put them in the center.” Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Kelsi, the members of the science club and the members if the basketball team put their hands in the center of the circle. Then, Troy put his hand on top of the pile.
“What team?!” Troy called out. “Wildcats!” everyone answered. “What team?!” “Wildcats!” “Wildcats! Get your head in the game!!”
The weeks passed quickly until the time for the Fall Musical. This time, Ryan and Kelsi worked together to create “At the Movies: A Musical Romance,” in which songs from various movies told the story of a pair of high school sweethearts.
After she told Jason of the plans, Kelsey smiled. “I have an idea, hun,” she said. Jason smiled. “Well, what is it?” he asked. “I'm going to audition for and get the female lead,” Kelsey said. “And while you are doing that, I can get Gabriella,” Jason said. “Our plan will come to fruition.”
Will it happen?
Auditions begin next time...
To be continued...
Author's Note: My decision to make Gabriella a member of the Wildcats basketball team was inspired by the spoof of “We're All In This Together” featuring characters from the Disney Channel animated series Lilo & Stitch: The Series. In it, “Angel” (Experiment 624) was the closest L&S:TS equivalent to Gabriella. And since Angel wore a Wildcats jersey, well, there you are.
